The Psychology of Self-Motivation
Self motivation is my biggest weakness, and one of my goals for the new year is to seek motivation every day. Because, once i’m motivated, i can focus on a task and get it done better. I recently watched an 11 minute ted-talk about the psychology of motivation. I'm going to sum it up for you so you don’t have to sit through the video. (If you still want to watch it yourself, i’ll link it below.)
The Ted-Talk was given by Scott Geller, who gave the listeners three fundamental questions to ask themselves in order to find motivation.
Can I do it?
Will it work?
Is it worth it?
If you answer yes to all three questions, you are empowered. These questions will obviously have different answers in different situations, but by answering these you give yourself reason to do said task.
Scott Geller also brought up a couple other strong points.
Consequences drive us. If the consequence of an assignment is failing or gaining knowledge, we are more likely to do it if we will fail. Negative consequences have stronger grasps on us.
It's a community, we need each other. Asking for help is GOOD, it makes others feel needed and only helps you. Instead of telling someone you can get something done yourself, reach out and ask for a helping hand.
So next time you find yourself in a slump, ask yourself these three key questions.
